Does the guest know who gets the tip?

HelloPay launches education campaign on Direct Tipping

Tipping with a credit card is a forward-looking solution from several points of view: if it is credited to the waiter's private bank account, it can be tax and contribution-free under current regulations, reduces administrative burdens and builds trust between guests, employees and employers - revealed HelloPay Zrt. at a press briefing.

Budapest, 31 July 2024. - The taxation of tips has become a popular topic in recent days. For years, HelloPay's Direct Tipping service has successfully offered a solution for paying tips by credit card, a widely known method in the cash environment. It does this in compliance with the legislation in force, tax and duty free - just as you would tip in cash, but with a debit card in line with the payment habits of the times and the innovative environment.

Despite the fact that the service has been available for many years and that guests, concert and festival-goers can encounter it every day, it is still not clear to many what constitutes a tip, what constitutes a service charge and what the waiter receives from it. For this reason, HelloPay Zrt. is launching an educational campaign.

Norbert Varga, CEO of Hellopay Zrt., and Ábel Zsendovits, owner of Szimpla Kert, one of the biggest and busiest entertainment venues in Budapest, shared their experiences with the media on the topic - the moderator of the discussion was Endre Kántor, founder of the gastronomic culture magazine Borravaló. The discussion revealed that around 90% of guests now pay with a credit card or smart device, that the amount of tips has increased measurably thanks to the Direct Tipping system, that tips are credited to the waiter's private bank account, and that this increases transparency, raises staff salaries and improves service standards.

"The solution is attractive for the employee, where there is a clear reward for a job well done, as the amount of the tip paid by the consumers is credited to their private bank account. It also reduces our administrative burden and makes it easier to retain staff, which is a win-win situation." - said Ábel Zsendovits.

Direct Tipping is a service where the credit card tips given by the guests are credited directly to the waiter's private bank account, while the value of the products is credited to the restaurant's company account. Under the current legislation, this is a major benefit for both waiters and restaurateurs due to the exemption from taxes and charges, increasing staff motivation and guest satisfaction.

"HelloPay has been working for years to contribute to the development of the hospitality industry and to increase guest and employee satisfaction by spreading the Direct Debit service. This is why we are launching our education campaign, because we want as many people as possible to take advantage of this positive opportunity." - said Norbert Varga.

HelloPay's Direct Tipping solution is currently used in more than 180 restaurants and catering establishments by around 700 waiters on a daily basis. The company aims to further develop its systems and introduce its industry-relevant value-added services, including its Direct Tipping solution, to more restaurants. The fact that HelloPay is now a subsidiary of OTP Mobil Kft. is a major contribution to the successful realisation of this goal. Exploiting synergies between the companies will open up further opportunities.
